Studio Theatre Presents....."Hair"

Review By Barbara Fox

I saw the original "Hair" when it opened in the 60s and I saw it again at the Studio Theatre. "Hair" is as great now as it was then. All of the emotions and flavors of the 60s are there along with some of the 90s touches like following the cast from room to room.

"Hair" is known as the American Tribal Love-Rock Musical. It is the celebration of love between Black and White, Straight and Gay, peace, self expression and joy. The story centers around Claude, unwillingly drafted for the Army. His friends organize a Be-In Protest; build a fire and burn their draft cards, except for Claude.

The musical is staged at the Studio Theatre's Second stage which holds about 100 people. On the night of this show, half of the audience was seated in two rows of chairs and the other half on the floor in front of them, eyeball to eyeball with the cast. At this intimate and close range, the cast were fascinating to watch, so closely.

Everyone of the cast stayed in character at all times, even when the focus was on another actor or actress. The cast is energetic and lively. The songs are wonderful--"Good Morning Star Shine," "Aquarius," "Walking in Space," "Frank Mills." It was hard not to sing along.

Studio Theatre's "Hair" is lively and fun to watch, a true celebration with the dark undertones and sense of impending crisis of the 60s. "Hair" is extended through Oct. 5. Call the Studion Theatre at 202-332-3300 for reservations...call today! Also beginning Studio Theatre's 20th Anniversay Season, is the opening of "Skylight," on Septemeber 3.
